A Country Off-Balance

I was on my regular walk around the neighborhood the other day, when a pit bull on a leash tried to attack me. Normally dogs and I get along well and I take the time to give them a pat on the head, but this vicious attack caught me off guard and brought a tear to my eye. It was unexpected and threw me off balance.

That’s the way I see our country right now. Long-time friends are lunging at each other because of differences in political views and it throws us off-balance. The aggressiveness and attacks I’ve seen are uncharacteristic of past relationships. I know one friend who was “unfriended” by another long-time friend on Facebook because of their political differences. Friends of mine are helping themselves to my Facebook page with their liberal agenda because they know I am a conservative. I am deducing they are trying to sway me and my conservative friends to their point of view.

Without naming candidates, I will tell you that I voted for the agenda that supports religious freedom, a freedom that is already eroding. Just yesterday, I received an article about two different senior living residents who are not being allowed to host a Bible study in their respective facilities. One is being threatened with eviction. Is that the way we want our society to go? https://www.libertyinstitute.org/2018-nov-b-say-yes-to-senior-bible-studies

I am hopeful that however the election turns out today, there will be peace in our country again once it’s over. I am praying that the cavernous division that has occurred will narrow, and that we will respect the way the majority voted. I am asking for a show of unconditional love, the kind Jesus taught about.

I don’t claim to be a political expert, but I do know something about the Bible, and here’s a dose of truth. Jesus said, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand” (Matthew 12:25).

This country is on wobbly legs. The only way the United States will be able to stand is if we once again build it on the solid foundation of Christ. (Matthew 7:24). When is the last time you opening up your Bible and read the word that is described as “living and active, sharper than a two-edged sword”? It is there that we find the blueprint of how to treat our brothers and sisters. It is there we see the principles we should fight for. It is there where we can find out about what works and does not work politically. Let’s consider returning to the faith of our founding fathers.

From Wallbuilders (https://wallbuilders.com/founding-fathers-jesus-christianity-bible/):

“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.” John Adams, Signer of the Declaration of Independence

“My hopes of a future life are all founded upon the Gospel of Christ. “ John Quincy Adams, Sixth President of the United States

“Rendering thanks to my Creator for my existence and station among His works, for my birth in a country enlightened by the Gospel and enjoying freedom, and for all His other kindnesses, to Him I resign myself, humbly confiding in His goodness and in His mercy through Jesus Christ for the events of eternity.” John Dickinson, Signer of the Constitution; Governor of Pennsylvania

“As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of morals and His religion as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see.”  Benjamin Franklin, Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution
