An Audience of Two
“Always be serving.”
“You need to deliver value to readers and to customers.”
As I listened to two social media experts teach about how to increase your blog following, I wondered if the Pearls of Promise blog was making a difference. They had a million followers. We have a fraction of that.
Armed with a new strategy, but a little discouraged, I immediately prayed, “Lord, show me if I am supposed to continue writing these devotions.” I wondered, Am I really making a difference in lives? I have been reevaluating everything I do, only desiring to be in the will of God with my ministry work.
The next day at lunch a new friend, and one of the Global Media Summit participants, was standing next to me in the buffet line and unsolicited said, “Lisa, I really enjoyed your blog series on grace.” I looked at her with amazement and told her she was an answer to prayer. Through her, God gave me immediate confirmation that I was to continue writing the POP blog. I also realized an important truth about life:
We play for an audience of two.
You’ve heard it said we only play for an audience of “one” but in a writer’s case, I am stretching that a bit. We do our work to please God, but also to reach just one soul. If the Holy Spirit touches one person through this blog, then that’s all that matters. Numbers are never important to God; in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
He chastised King David for taking a census.
He whittled Gideon’s grand army down.
In Psalm 33:16 it says, “No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.”
After his arrest, Jesus said, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
But he didn’t.
He was one Man.
One God.
One Sacrifice.
One Savior.
God is pleased and glorified every time we reach just one person for his kingdom.
So friends, let’s quit worrying about the numbers. Today I am praying that this writing will reach one of you. I challenge you to pray to make a difference in one person’s life. I promise the other member of your audience, your Heavenly Father, will be pleased.
That is exactly how I am reminded (by spiritual guidance?) to approach all acts of service, whether writing or relating in other ways. Remember the images/stories of ripples in a lake or throwing the starfish into the ocean, or Jesus’ parable of the sower?

Thank you, Lisa, for your transparency and sharing your heart about your blog, POP. The sermon by Christine Caine this weekend at Gateway confirmed what the Lord impressed on you. She said, “Every one of us has the capacity to enlarge and carry God to our generation.” We just need a willing heart, and the Lord will fulfill His purpose.
