Creating a Holiday of Joy by Dr. Lynnette Simm

Are you ready for Christmas? My halls and home are all decked out.

My snowmen take up two bookshelves and the nativity scene covers the expanse of a table. Each year, I try to create a festive home atmosphere for my family and friends. The warmth of seeing old Christmas cards from my grandma, who passed away a decade ago, and childhood creations from my daughters brings the old and young together. We laugh as we decorate, and get sentimental too. I love decorating with my family.

This time of year is both a blessing and hardship for most of us. We remember loved ones who have left us and enjoy those who are still with us. This year brings news of a new family member coming soon. Joy is filling our holidays.

Yes, we struggle with gifts and not overdoing it, but we don’t forget why this time of year is so important to us. We celebrate the birth of Jesus.

While we scholars know that Jesus wasn’t born in December, we as Christians have come together to end our calendar year acknowledging His birth. During this season, the fields are bare and most work is winding down. It’s the perfect time of year to slow down and celebrate.

We celebrate Jesus and the journey the wise men made when they saw the star, indicating the Son of God was born. We celebrate a family growing with a new baby. We celebrate the rest of our family and friends. We celebrate the end of the year and the new beginning about to come.

Renew your joy in this season. Renew your relationships with family and friends. Renew old traditions and create new ones. Renew your hearts as we celebrate Jesus coming to Earth to share His heart and sacrifice His life for us all.
