Does Your Schedule Belong to You or God?

Have you ever taken the time to record your life on paper? Hour-by-hour, writing down where you spend your time, who you spend it with, and reevaluating if it all fits your personal mission? It’s a good way to start the year.

Yesterday, I went through that exercise with a friend, who is also a life coach. The results were surprising. Combining my ministry and all of my jobs, both paid and volunteer, I work 50-60 hours per week. It was shocking to me. I thought, No wonder I’m so tired! No wonder I am battling an upper respiratory infection. No wonder I can’t find time to meet with people who desire some mentoring. No wonder I can’t get to that paper clutter in my office.

You don’t need a life coach to go through this process. Take the time to put hours to where you spend your time during the week, then lay it all before God. Ask Him:

“What needs to change?”

“Where do I need to adjust?”

“How do you want me to spend the time you give me in 2018?

Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

It’s true. The LORD desires for us to give him control of our schedule. He wants us to live out the passage “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–7). But he can’t straighten the crooked roads if we don’t lay our calendars at His feet.

I believe God desires for us to have margin in our days so we make room to address divine surprises that he may bring us. He wants us to be fresh for that opportunity to share Jesus with someone else. He doesn’t want us fried or harried all the time. Then we are not exhibiting His perfect peace to others, and that’s not attractive.
