How Bold is Your Ringtone?

I am not known for being shy about sharing my faith, but this past month I took the ultimate leap in witnessing when I downloaded a Christian ringtone.  It has been a progression over a number of years and until I downloaded the Christian song, it didn’t even occur to me to put  Christian music on my phone, not even a Christmas carol!  When I first started using a cell phone, I simply utilized one of the free ringtones offered by the cell phone company, then about a year ago, I ventured out and downloaded a song that reminded me of my faith, but was secular.  After I bought my latest phone; however, the thought came to me, “A cell phone ring tone could be such a witness, without my even saying a word!”  I checked a ring tone source for one of my favorite Christian songs, “How Great is Our God” by Chris Tomlin, and found the Tomlin song immediately. I am technologically challenged, so after a few tries, I finally downloaded this powerful Christian tune onto my phone.

I then waited for the phone to ring.  I waited and waited and waited!  I had never wanted the phone to ring so bad!  I didn’t want it to ring while I was alone.  I wanted it to ring in a crowded grocery store, at my son’s basketball game, or at a busy restaurant.  I wanted the world to know that God is great!  My phone did finally ring but what I’ve found; however, is that the ringtone is speaking to me, perhaps more than it is speaking to others.  It makes me jump every time it sounds, as if God is announcing his presence to me.  When the phone rings, it is a daily reminder to me that my God is great!

While I was in seminary, I studied many fathers of our faith but in the 11th century, Anselm of Canterbury, in an argument to prove the existence of God, said the non existence of God is impossible if you believe that God is “something than which nothing greater can be thought.”  I have never forgotten this teaching and since then, have thought of God as greater than my thoughts can perceive.  I no longer attempt to put God in my finite box.  That’s why I love the song, “How Great is our God.”  It reminds me of Anselm’s message that I embraced.  1 Chronicles 29:11 speaks to this greatness:  “Yours O Lord is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.”

So how about it?  The next time you download a ringtone, think about using it as a witness or a daily reminder to yourself about some attribute of God. It doesn’t have to be about God’s greatness.  It can be about His love, his faithfulness or his mercy.  Who wouldn’t want the phone to ring if God is calling!
