How Do You Handle Uncertainty?

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand (Psalm 16:11).

Have you ever felt lost or disconnected in a new environment?

In 2014, in the midst of a life-changing visit to Israel, I received a message from God: “Your Jewish father died but your Jewish roots did not die.”

I asked, “What am I supposed to do with this?” There was no answer for a while, but a year later we were moved out of our church to a mega church in the area that loves Israel, teaches Jewish roots and has a monthly Messianic service. I knew this was a place where I could learn about my heritage.

However, I like connectivity, and week after week as I scanned the sea of nameless faces in the sanctuary, I felt hopelessly lost. I often asked, Are you sure this is where you want us? Remember, Lord, that I don’t like crowds.

To make the church smaller, I knew I needed to plug into some kind of service. Busy outside the church with Pearls of Promise and my other ministry jobs, I did not want to take a wrong step, so I waited and prayed. “Altar Ministry” kept coming up. That’s where you go in front of the church at the end of the service and pray with anyone who needs prayer. Standing there, you have no idea the nature of their problem. You must rely on the Holy Spirit to show you how to pray for them.

That job made me nervous. Are you sure this is what you want me to do? I’ve always been able to pray with people I know and can say a prayer before a thousand people on a platform, but one-on-one with a stranger is out of my box. I remember many years ago when I broke out in a rash while leading someone I didn’t know to Christ after a ministry event.

But on faith, I went through the training and last night was my first night at the altar. I went over the instruction manual and prayed all day that the Lord would give me His words. There was a pre-service prayer that I attended. When the individual praying lifted up the altar team, I felt a chill over my body. Confirmation, I thought. I knew I was proceeding in the right direction.

I tried to concentrate on the message last night but as the minister of the Word spoke, I continued to pray, Lord, bring the person to me that you want me to pray with. Pleeeze.

The message ended, the music began to infiltrate the room and it was time to go forward. I stood there waiting for a while. Maybe this is a soft opening. Maybe I won’t pray with anyone tonight. Then a woman walked toward me. Here we go. I cannot give any details about our prayer time except that God brought me a Jewish believer. We immediately connected and I felt an incredible joy while praying with her. I thought afterward, I can do this! Not only can I do this, but I love this!

I was giddy afterward. Just like Psalm 16:11 says, He filled me with joy in His presence.

God moved me to a new place of worship for a reason. It was difficult at first but he has shown me that Messianic Ministries is my home and he is connecting me with other people within that ministry. Sometimes; however, when he leads us to an unfamiliar place, a different environment, and new area of service, it is a trust walk for a while. We must wait on him before we take our next step.
