Is Your House in Order?

We thought we were having company over the weekend so we prepared. We have been in our house for about a year now, but still had some pictures to hang in one of the rooms. We organized the garage and my husband worked on the pool. But then, our company canceled at the last minute. At first I was unhappy about working so hard for nothing, but I thought, These are projects we’ve been putting off for a while. I’m glad we got them done. It felt good to finally get pictures off the floors and on the walls.

We had slacked off after our initial move and gotten busy with our own respective work. We didn’t take time to finish putting our house in order so it was tedious to get it ready for company, and even with all the hours spent on projects, still didn’t finish the work.

This scenario reminds me of our spiritual life. Sometimes we slack off thinking, Is Jesus really coming back? After all it’s been over 2,000 years since he promised to return. So we slip back to old tendencies and behaviors and disregard our spiritual edification.

In the Parable of the Ten Virgins found in Matthew 25 it says, “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ ‘But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour” (Matthew 25:1-13).

Jesus' return

We don’t want to be caught off guard. We need to believe daily that today could be the day.

What will be the last thing you say before you meet Jesus?

What will be your most recent thought?

Your final action?

Will you have any regrets?

My biggest fear is that the first words out of my mouth will be “I’m sorry” rather than “Welcome back!”

Is your house in order? God’s word tells us that we should not wait because tomorrow might be too late.
