Like a Deer

I’m holed up in a hotel room today preparing for a women’s conference. My locale is on the border of the Texas Hill Country so the view isn’t too bad from the window. However, I hadn’t even started to write, when a deer, running next to a distant fence line, distracted me. He had apparently escaped from his wooded home and was trying to get back in, but didn’t know how to do it.

Even from my vantage point, I could tell the little deer was getting worn out trying to find his way home. In fact, he appeared frantic. I kept wanting to yell: “Just jump the fence! Your family is on the other side.”

Aren’t we like that little deer sometimes?

Running so hard and fast, trying to find our purpose and meaning?

Running to jobs.

Running to material things.

Running to human love.

And it wears us out.

None of it seems to fill the void. What we don’t realize is that the true meaning of life is just on the other side of the fence, so close we can touch it, but for some reason, we don’t see it.

I believe if we just stop the running for a moment and ask God to open our eyes, He’ll reveal the escape route to the true meaning of life, only found through belief in His Son, Jesus Christ. He’s the answer to the division we’re experiencing in our country, and the hatred that has resulted in violence. None of this is of God and is contrary to His Word. We’re like the deer mentioned in Psalm 42: “As the deer pants for water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. Where can I find him to come and stand before him?”

Sometimes as we pant from our running, we don’t realize it’s God that we are thirsting for. He’s created a hole in our hearts that only He can fill.

Are you running?

Looking for answers?

Need Meaning?

Open your eyes. The answer is just on the other side of the fence.
