Now that Thanksgiving is Over

I’ll admit it, I didn’t go out at midnight, but I did leave bright and early to do some shopping on “Black Friday.” I’ll also admit that I was excited about it. Buying clothes anywhere from 50-60 percent off gets this girls adrenaline going!

While the shopping extravaganza officially started the Christmas season, this morning I did some reflecting on the concept of our country’s materialistic start to the celebration of our Savior’s birth.

I dreamt, “What if merchants initiated “Super Saturday” instead of “Black Friday”? “What if Friday became “Fasting Friday” and instead of pulling out our cash and credit cards, we pulled out our Bibles and spent the day refraining from eating food so we could hear the voice of God clearly?” If you ate as much as I did on Thanksgiving, that may seem appealing to you. “What if we asked the Lord how we could glorify him during the Christmas season?” “What if we began the Christmas season with Jesus and not a purchase?” I know I’m still dreaming.

It’s not too late. Like me, you may have hit the sales and been downright giddy about it. I’m not condemning you. We are just alike. However, today, you and I have an opportunity to make things right by praying:

Lord, as I enter this Christmas season, reveal to me how I can honor you. Each day, remind me of why you were sent to this earth; a sacrifice for my sins so that I might spend eternity with you. Show me how I can represent your love to others and in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the season, help me to never neglect the precious, still, quiet time alone with you.

Isn’t Jesus worth our attention? I always find it strange that I spend less time with him during the Christmas season than any other time of year. How I want to change! Isaiah 9:6 says: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

He is all that to me and more, and that’s why I want to honor him, now that Thanksgiving is over.
