Our ministry team had the opportunity to meet popular author and speaker, Liz Curtis Higgs this week after the taping of the Life Today show. The creator of the “Bad Girls of the Bible” series has a new book out called The Girl’s Still Got it” based on the book of Ruth.
Higgs has a contagious, exuberant personality and in many ways, she is like Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, a mentor, setting the example for us aspiring writers of how a successful author should act. Despite selling millions of books and speaking at over 1500 venues, there was no superstar bubble around her. She was still approachable and down to earth, taking photos with and autographing books for every woman who took the time to come see her interview.
In our world today, women are starved for mentors. While men have the “good ‘ol boy” network down, it is my experience with women that there is too much competition and not enough connecting.
There is a great need for more Naomi’s!
In the book of Ruth, when Naomi decided to return to her homeland after losing her husband and sons, she instructed her newly widowed daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, to return home to their parents because she couldn’t offer them anything. Orpah moved on, but Ruth didn’t abandon her mother-in-law replying, Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Naomi made such an impression on Ruth that her young daughter-in-law insisted on following her!
Would anyone want to follow you?
I am currently facilitating a Bible study where every female in the study is younger than me. That might have been intimidating at one point in my life, but now God has brought me to a place where I embrace the responsibility of being a Naomi to these ladies. I want Christ to be so visible in me that they “want to go where I go” and desire “my God to be their God.” I am praying to live a consistent life of faith, without hypocrisy, so that I am worthy of following.
It’s a calling I am not able to answer on my own. Christ must do it through me.
So, what about you? Are you ready to take the leap to the next level, the elite class of Naomi nobility? If not, ask the Lord to infuse you with the passion to mentor, because there are countless women searching for their own personal Naomi. As Jesus said in Matthew 9:37: The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
