Seven Benefits of Seeking God

black-friday

Black Friday.

I wrestled with the decision to make an earlier than usual start to battle crowds for door-buster bargains.

Was it worth it?

At first I didn’t think so. I began at one large department store that looked like a war zone.

Clothes strewn everywhere.

Items out of place.

I gave up trying to unearth a pair of jeans I needed for a gift.

One woman placed a set of treasured silverware by the checkout counter for five minutes, and when she returned, someone had grabbed it right out from under her.

Brutal.

But after I persisted past this difficult beginning and ventured into the mall, the tide turned.

I found beautiful gifts for friends and family

It was then that I wondered, What if we sought God like we seek bargains?

What if we got up earlier than usual to find unexpected treasures?

What if we battled through the distractions and disorder in our lives, seeking God until we find him?

That’s when I buried my nose in Scripture to find out what God promises us when we seek him. Here are the first three:

  1. Acceptance- Perhaps the holidays are a difficult time for you. Maybe you feel rejected by family members and don’t have anyone to talk to. If you seek God, you will never be shunned, ridiculed or silenced. In John 6:36, Jesus says, “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” When you seek the Lord, he is waiting for you with open arms and desires for you to pour out your heart to him.
  2. Direction- Are you unsure about which path to take? Contemplating a change but don’t know if it’s the right thing to do? Seek God. Proverbs 28:5 says, “Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.” In the same way he will guide us to right behavior. We often have to be convicted before we understand our actions are wrong. We can pinpoint sinfulness in friends and family members but are blinded to our own shortcomings. If we seek God, he often gently nudges us in a different direction, the way that is right.
  3. God- Are you entangled in a difficult situation and need divine help? Do you wonder where God is in the chaos? God promises that if we seek him, we will find him, so don’t call off the search! Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” When you get alone with God, tell God you long for his presence. Go after him like you do that special gift for a loved one. Don’t stop reading his Word until you experience his touch. This morning I sought after, and found God when this Bible verse lit up: “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” My precious Abba Daddy told me he loved me this morning, just like he is telling you now. Seeking God is beneficial to your soul. You will not be disappointed in your quest because God assures you will find him.

On Tuesday, we will share the other four benefits of seeking God.
