Seven Things We Should Seek (Part 6)

Seek Good

Have you ever wished that you could divide yourself into two or three people so you could get the “to do” list done?

That’s the way I’m feeling today.

Hello, I am Lisa Burkhardt Worley and I am an overachiever. Is there a 12-step program for that?

I oversee my own ministry, Pearls of Promise, work for another ministry and volunteer for two other ministries. I find a way to manage the work but sometimes when all the deadlines hit at once, and family needs, along with a car accident also pull at my time, it throws me out of sync and I feel overwhelmed.

Have you ever felt that way?

Today, I speak at a big conference (HeartStrong) in Dallas and I am weary, but grateful for the opportunity and remembering the passage:  Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

We should seek to do good, not only in our work, but in our actions and our words. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Two days ago, I felt guilty about a conversation I had with a woman and realized my words were not spoken in the name of the Lord Jesus, but uttered out of pride. I think it had something to do with my stress level at the time, but it’s not who I want to be. I want to seek good in all that I do because I want to be a representative of Jesus Christ, not Lisa. I apologized to her for my “less than good” conversation.

So how are you doing with seeking good, even in the worst of circumstances? Are you weary of doing good? Do you encourage others to seek the good in situations?

In seminary, I studied the life of theologian John Wesley. He is someone who strived to do good, and may have been an overachiever as well! But he said something that has never left me, and it’s good advice for all of us.

Do all the good you can.

By all the means you can.

In all the ways you can.

In all the places you can

At all the times you can.

In order to do and be good at all times, we must stay connected to God 24/7. In a touchy conversation, pray before speaking. Ask Are these good words? Is it edifying? Seek God to help you see good and do good because He is good and we are created in His image.

I hope you have a good day!

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works…(Hebrews 10:24).
