The Bunny Surprise

We’ve started a new tradition on Mother’s Day weekend. Last year, my husband was away, so my son and his girlfriend came up to spend the weekend with me. Besides having a great visit, the two also helped me plant tomatoes and cucumbers while they were here. You have to understand why this is so exciting to me. I had never had a garden, and green is not the color of my thumb. I need outside help.

However, with the kids’ guidance, the tomatoes plants thrived, as did the cucumbers. It was a bumper crop!

So this year, they are once again coming up for Mother’s Day, so I asked them to oversee the planting again, and to make it easier, in advance of their arrival, I decided to clear the planter, now overgrown with weeds.

I was almost done when I made a surprising discovery. Tucked away in a small section of the planter were some baby creatures huddled together in a small hole. They had been covered with grass and the mother’s fur. At first I worried they were rats. I hate rats. But then I saw their longer ears and realized it was a nest of baby bunnies.

What do I do now?

I sought help from Facebook friends, but in the meantime, I covered them back up and tried to leave their birthplace the way I found it. It was everyone’s opinion to leave them alone, and let nature take its course, so that’s what I’ve done.

As I think back on my glimpse of nature in action, I am once again awed by God’s magnificent creation. The mother bunny found what she thought was a safe place to birth her kids, covered them with grass to protect them, and apparently bit off her fur to further insulate them.

That is just one little creature’s routine. There are 8.7 million different species on Earth. Each has their own way of doing things and their own quirks. And I consider Job 12:7-10 that says, “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;  or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”

Creation has always been enough for me to believe there is a Holy God, who is also a beautiful designer. What about you?

Spring is a good time to take a moment to admire God’s handiwork and reflect on the Creator God who put all this together. As you do this, will you also thank Him for the picturesque world he created? What if there was no vegetation or animals? Now, that would be very boring.
