What’s Your Word for 2018?

My dining room table transformed into a loading dock yesterday with most of my Christmas decorations on the table waiting to be stored away until next December. Even though I love the Christmas season, I was ready to put the angels, snowmen and reindeer away to make way for my word in 2018, “new.”

Have you asked for your word to live by yet?

I began this process in 2015 after reading the book, One Word that Will Change Your Life by Dan Britton.  I thought, That’s a good idea. I am going to try it. So I prayed for a word and God was faithful to provide the word, “give.” That year, I opened my eyes as to how I could give back to my family, people, and organizations.

The next year, 2016, the word was “sacrifice.” God asked, “What are you willing to sacrifice for me?” We downsized our house and I went back to work part-time to help with our son’s college and my ministry expenses.

Last year, after living out the word “sacrifice,” I suggested a  word to God. I wanted it to be “breakthrough.” Instead, He said, “No, your word is ‘pray’ because without prayer there is no ‘breakthrough.’” Based on Psalm 92:12–13, the Lord showed me how to transform my prayer life. Instead of a few minutes, I pray for an hour most mornings.

I “plant myself in God’s court” and lift up everything to the Lord, knowing I am nothing without God’s hand on my life. It is in our Father’s court that we receive breakthrough.

So toward the end of 2017, I asked for my 2018 word. “New” kept coming up. Because we were headed into the New Year, I didn’t want to get confused about all the references to that. So I kept asking for repeat messages and God was faithful. “New, new, new” was everywhere I turned and then the Holy Spirit showed me this verse:

“You were taught, with regard to your former self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22–24).

A new attitude.

A new righteousness.

A new level of holiness.

I realized that in 2018, the Lord wants to take me to a new level spiritually, and I am ready. There may be other “new” things along the way, but they have not been revealed yet. That is the fun part of living out the word God has for your life. There are surprises along the way.

So, what about you?

What is your word? As you can see, God is faithful to provide. If you don’t know your word yet, keep your eyes and ears open for His answer, often repeated until we see it for ourselves.
