Are You Weary? By Lisa Burkhardt Worley

Have you ever had so much on your plate that you did not realize the extent of it? You keep carrying it all until the plate becomes so heavy it cracks.

For me, it’s Level-Up Conference time so there are many moving parts, but I am also trying to get ahead in school by a month because of October travel. That, combined with a couple of other volunteer job responsibilities, has led to a tedious, non-stop work schedule.

This morning I was reading Isaiah 40 and the plate cracked. Tears flowed.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

(Isaiah 40:29-31, NIV).

I realized I am weary. The heavy load is weighing me down. My arms are tired from all the juggling. So I admitted this to God and prayed for His strength and His power—to walk and not be faint. Confessing weakness to our heavenly Father is therapeutic.

The old saying that “God does not give us more than we can handle” is not biblical. Instead, he wants us to seek His face during trials. This week I also experienced vicious attacks from non-believers on Facebook. I decided to pay $10 to boost my last blog on Deep Work because I thought it was a subject that could help a lot of people. (It’s all about how to get those shelved projects accomplished—plus how to go deeper with God.) That meant Facebook placed it on non-friends’ feeds. The push-back was unreal. Vicious posts. Condescending memes. One person posted an animated devil six times. I’ve either hidden or deleted them all. It is making me think long and hard about ever boosting another devotion. Weariness.

But today, after a rainy week, the sun is out in Galveston, Texas where my husband and I have holed up since Sunday. There are no eagles but there are a few seagulls soaring overhead. I think it’s a sign from God that He heard my prayer and He has this, but it is only through His strength that any of us can survive the times when life seems overwhelming.
