The Meaning of Snow

Have you ever longed to get away to a secluded place, simply to be quiet, and to sit in the presence of God? Maybe you are at a crossroad, and have no idea which way the Lord wants you to turn.

Is it left?

Is it right?

Is it straight ahead?

Often, a busy schedule or family commitments prevent us from carving out that much needed time for listening, rest, and reflection, so when we desire to be quiet before God, sometimes he graciously brings the atmosphere of the secluded mountain to us.

In the form of snow.

Non-stop snow.

Peaceful, majestic snow.

It is beautiful, but it shuts businesses down. It closes roads. It cancels appointments. It stops activities. We are holed up and forced to be still. We admire, and can’t help but slow down and think.

I love the snow, because here in Texas, we don’t see it that often. As I look out my window asking God what to write today, all I want to do is to thank him for the snow’s beauty, and the purity it represents. I’m mesmerized by the countless flakes pouring from the sky.

What does snow represent to you?

Snow can remind us of our faith walk because when we become Christians, we are cleansed of our sins and become whiter than snow.

The snow provides an image of our maker. The Ancient of Days is described by Daniel in Daniel 7:9 with clothing “as white as snow.”

When Mary Magdalene and Mary went to Jesus’ tomb, there was a violent earthquake, and an angel of the Lord appeared with an appearance like lightning, and his clothes were “white as snow.”

In Revelation 1:14, Jesus’ hair was described as white like wool, and white as snow.

When we look at the snow, we should think “holy.”

So what are we supposed to do when we are home-bound because of a snowstorm?

Maybe we should praise God for this piece of his creation. Praise him for all the goodness he has brought to our lives. Perhaps we even need to praise God for the bad.

In Job 27, it says, “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding, he says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ So that everyone he has made may know his work, he stops all people from their labor.”

There it is. God created snow to bring our busy lives to a standstill. While we are in pause, we should pay heed to the snow, and look up, for that’s where the compass is pointing.

When we couldn’t go to the mountain, the Lord brought the mountain to us to capture our undivided attention. He has a message for us if we desire to download it. I’m listening, and as I watch the snow blanket my yard, I’m praying his words blanket my mind. What about you?

Be still. Hear God’s whisper in the snowflake.
