What Does the United States Really Need?

election

It’s election day.

While I’d like to pull the covers over my head and avoid it, it’s shouting a message I can’t ignore.

It’s because I’ve been paralleling our country with the same issue.

Pride.

You know that feeling inside that you deserve more than what you’re getting.

That you need to be recognized by others.

The mindset that says, “I’m more important than how I’m being treated.”

It’s a struggle many of us have. It’s the need to be known.

In reality, God is the one who exalts us and when we exalt ourselves, God disdains it. In Proverbs 8:13, it says the Lord hates pride.

So knowing that, there’s a tug-of-war going on in my soul between humility and pride. I’ve been praying Philippians 2:3 over my life that I may do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but rather in humility value others above myself.

I desire to have the humility of Jesus.

So what does this have to do with today’s election?

trump

What occurred to me is that neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump can save this country.

It’s a pride issue.

The United States has drifted away from its Maker.

This country is removing God at every turn.

And when a civilization or any individual thinks it can make it without “In God we trust” then there’s a fall.

be-humble

Historically, God has been known to remove leaders and allow countries to be overrun because of pride. In Daniel 5:20, it says when King Nebuchadnezzar’s “heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from high royal throne and stripped of his glory.”

If we believe God is sovereign, he’ll do it again.

That’s why we need to humble ourselves, because the United States, as we know it, is eroding.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

cross divides

The only one who can heal this country is God, not Trump, not Clinton, not the Senate, or the House of Representatives. But for that to happen we have to bow humbly before the Heavenly Throne and plead for mercy.

We have to pray for the future leader of the United States to choose humility as well, and seek the true ruler on this Earth.

As the mud slinging from the election finally tapers off and we elect a new president, I’m praying for the United States to make a U-turn from pride to humility. I’m praying we realize we cannot make it without God at the helm.

Because only God can make this country great again.
