Who is Our Helper? By Lane Jordan Burday
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you (John 14:16-17).

There are thousands of religions in the world, with estimates ranging from over 4,000 to as many as 10,000 distinct religions, though there is no precise consensus on the exact number. Most people adhere to one of the world’s major religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism, which collectively account for a large majority of the global population.
But what I love to share is that with all these religions in the world, there is only one, one, where God comes to mankind. With all the others, man must work hard all his life to attain paradise (Heaven), and even at the end of his life, he is not sure if he will make it there.

But the one religion where God comes down to His creation to build a relationship is Christianity. Repeatedly, God tells us in His Word that He has come to us, and His salvation is a gift!
The main verse emphasizing that salvation is a gift from God is Ephesians 2:8-9, which states, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
This is a wonderful verse because God is saying to us that we don’t have to do anything —any type of work—to gain His favor and eternal life. What a gift! And God never takes this gift away.

I know many of you are thinking, “But don’t we have to do good to others? Don’t we need to serve others and our church family?” And yes, God asks us to do that, but only after we have received His Son, Jesus Christ, into our lives. Because once we accept Jesus, then God will send His Holy Spirit to our spirit, who will help us every day of our lives to do the work He has called us to do.

To me, this is one of God’s greatest miracles. The Holy Spirit is designed to be your Helper. He is always ready to help; all you need to do is ask. And we cannot do anything for God without the strength and help from the Holy Spirit.
In the Old Testament, Zerubbabel was tasked with rebuilding the temple, but God knew he couldn’t do it on his own. In Zechariah 4:6, “…This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel; ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
We can do nothing apart from God’s power in His Holy Spirit. We should be awed by the power and the glory of God’s Spirit in us!

The scriptural basis for the statement “I can do nothing without Christ” is found in John 15:5. In this verse, Jesus, speaking to His disciples, states, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
I pray that you will come to know that we have a God so infinitely great that He can live within someone so very small as us. What a blessing the Holy Spirit is!
