Seeking Him First

What does Matthew 6:33 really mean, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well?” The Greek word used for “first” means “above all.”  In other words, God goes to the top of the list.

I’ve found in my own life, when Christ is on the top rung, the blessings overflow. My actions, my thoughts and my affections all revolve around the cross and God responds with his abundant love and favor. I’ve seen so many lives turn around when they implement this verse on a regular basis. Marriages improve, attitudes change and doors open.  All the things that are “given to us as well.”

I believe sometimes God tests us to see if He really is first in our life. I experienced that this week and said to the Lord over and over:  “I love them but I love you more and I am choosing to never do anything to disappoint you.” Although I know I’m a sinner and fall miserably short of the glory of God, I have a healthy fear of God. I’ve let him slip to second, third and at one time last in my life and I believe, now that He’s back at the top, He expects me to never allow anything or anyone to take His place.

But we have free will. It’s a choice to seek Him first. If you’re not doing so, won’t you try it? I’m not telling you it will be easy. Choosing God over another person or thing may be the most difficult thing you ever have to do, but it’s worth it and God will honor the sacrifice you’ve made for Him.  Lisa Burkhardt Worley

    1. Macey, I think it just takes spiritual growth to realize we can only find contentment in Christ! It’s part of the journey.
