“Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it. (Ruth 2:2)

There is beauty in our brokenness.

In the book of Ruth, we discover that Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, were two broken women. They wandered in their sorrow.

However, I’d like to think that Ruth recovered quicker than Naomi. She was Naomi’s strength during her time of brokenness.

Together, they fled from Moab to Bethlehem after both are widowed. This is where it would all begin for Ruth. Ruth would have an encounter that would change her life. She had a divine appointment with the King.

desert

Have you ever been in a dry desolate place that you were wandering around broken? Have you experienced extreme heartbreak and lost everything during the process? You lost your sense of direction, your self-confidence, your ability to breathe fresh air, and your self-worth. You felt as though you have been stripped naked.

I have been there and I have been there more than once. Why more than once?

I never took the time to find out why I repeated the same process until earlier this year. Everything came crashing down. I was forced to walk away from a two-year relationship that was sucking the life out of me. My virtue was whittled away by family and friends.

Through it all, there was restoration awaiting me.

field

Like Ruth, we are often called to leave the comforts of home and venture into a lonely field for an encounter with the King.

Hungry, Ruth knew she needed to help Naomi and herself. She told Naomi that she wanted to go into the field to glean the left behind grain from anyone she could. Unaware of the field she had chosen, she landed right in the field of Boaz, her future husband. She would discover her destiny and purpose.

God took me into a vision of myself in that very field. The field was full of harvest. The leftovers were plentiful. I was wrapped in Ruth’s garments and I was weeping tears of joy. This was happening because every hand-full of grain that I picked up had a piece of restoration. I picked up the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. All these characteristic traits allowed me to become whole in my living and my relationship with God. Anything that I dropped was impure.

separate

God has a way of separating us from the world to ensure that we hear his voice and receive His very best. His very best begins with a cleansing. We can come to the Father and rest in Him to be restored. He drops nuggets for us to pick up and to be filled with His fruit. Each nugget thrusts us higher into our restoration.

The more effort Ruth gave to gleaning in the field, the more she was rewarded for her hard work. She was noticed by Boaz, the owner of the field. He saw in her what she did not see in herself. He saw the inner beauty in her brokenness.

If you find yourself in unfamiliar territory, trust that God will meet you in the field he’s called you to and that a harvest will come. The King of Kings is at work in your brokenness and suffering. Through it, He is drawing out your inner beauty because that is a reflection of Him.
