Divine Breath by Lisa Burkhardt Worley, D.Min.
This week, we interviewed Author and Podcast Host Daniah Greenberg on POP Talk. Daniah is also the creator of the TLV Bible, my go-to when I am studying the Word. One of the subjects we addressed is the Tetragrammaton, or the divine name of God, YHVH. The name means “He is present,” but when spoken, the letters sound like breathing. Greenberg contended that every time we breathe, we inhale and exhale the name of God.
This made sense to me. It is the LORD who gave the first created being the breath of life. “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature” (Genesis 2:7, ESV). Job proclaimed, “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4).
How different would our words be if we believed that the very breath of God resided inside us? Would we be kinder to others and ourselves? Would we take a breath of YHVH before we speak?
1 Timothy 3:16-17 states that all Scripture is breathed out by God as well. Timothy said the Word is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” When we embrace the Word of God on a daily basis, we are breathing in His goodness, wisdom, and examples of how to treat others. Breathe in God’s Word. Breathe out truth.
The breath of God is within us. His Divine Name flows through us. Today, I do not take my breath for granted. It is a gift from my Heavenly Father. It is His presence within—giving us and others life.
