Don’t Grow Weary by Lisa Burkhardt Worley, D.Min.

The panic is starting to set in. Thanksgiving is a week from Thursday, and I am hosting the family at our house. That means cleaning clutter, taking the time to organize my messy closet, and sprucing up the outside of the house. At the same time, ministry work still needs to get done, and this morning I asked myself, Why am I working so hard?

The LORD responded immediately through the words of Hebrews 12. Hebrews 12 carries so much encouragement like:

“Let us run with endurance the race set before us” (Hebrews 12:1, NKJV).

”For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, lest you grow weary and discouraged in your souls (Hebrews 12:3, NKJV).

“Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and week knees (Hebrews 12:12, NIV).

“Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed” (Hebrews 12:13, NIV).

The last two verses pertain to taking care of our bodies. My knees are definitely weaker due to years of pounding them on the hard court, and I think this is a reminder to do what we can to strengthen our bodies, because we must be strong both physically and spiritually to serve God effectively.

Toward the end of Hebrews 12, it says, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude—through this we may offer worship in a manner pleasing to God, with reverence and awe.”

I think the overall message is to not grow weary in our service to God, but to strengthen our bodies so we can keep up the pace, and lastly, to be grateful that He has chosen us to fulfill His purpose on Earth.

This chapter of Hebrews was just the fuel I needed to keep moving forward. What about you?
