How Do You Get Peace? By Lane Jordan Burday

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).

As you well know, Charlie Kirk was murdered last week while sharing his views and thoughts at a college campus in Utah. One would think that in America, we would have freedom of speech. But hatred abounds, and he lost his life. A life that sought to show the world, especially young minds at college, the truth of God’s word and the moral compass that would guide them to a life of purpose and meaning.

I couldn’t quit crying when I heard the news. His senseless death was devastating to me. How could he be gone in just a second and leave a young wife and two children who will now be fatherless?

As I was having my quiet time today, the thought of God’s peace came to mind. Yes, we live in a fallen world where Satan will do everything he can to destroy everything God loves and has created. “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (I Peter 5:6). But God came to us as Jesus to show us that we can have peace in chaos.

God’s peace is a continual gift to us. The best way to receive this gift is to sit quietly in His Presence, trusting Him in every area of your life and in all that is happening in the world. We also need to trust God in all things. When we trust God, we release that problem or person into His care. Yes, even the enormous problems of hatred and violence, we must give these to God.

He is on His throne, and He is in control! We can ask why all day long, but in the end, we must come to the decision that God knows what is going on and that “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

And now we can see how Romans 8:28 is being realized! More people have viewed Charlie’s talks, more people have discussed his horrendous death, and it seems that the whole world is discussing this tragic event.

We also need to remember that Christians, you and I, are not fighting flesh. God says in Ephesians 6:12:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

We need to remember that our time on earth is incredibly short. God is in control, He wants to give you peace, and He is fighting our enemies. We must trust God. Obey God. And live a life that is a witness to this dying world.
