It Doesn’t Take Much

cindy from Trinidad twoIt doesn’t take much to be a witness for God.  I’ve found being evangelical doesn’t mean you have to blast out the gospel on a megaphone at a street corner.  There are other more creative ways to spread the Word.

This week I am visiting one of my favorite cities, New York City. The reason why I love New York so much is because of the melting pot of different cultures, the learning that goes on here, the arts and of course, the incredible food!  Knowing I am in transition, a friend of mine told me to pay careful attention to how the Lord speaks to me, even in this busy metropolis.

I enjoy Broadway shows and yesterday we saw Newsies, an incredible musical filled with fabulous dance, featuring a brilliant young actor in the lead role, Corey Cott.  During the intermission, I decided to read more about Corey’s accomplishments and saw at the end of his bio, a scripture listed, 1Corinthians 10:31.  The scripture says, So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Corey was giving God the glory for his amazing acting ability on stage. Corey was a witness to thousands of people, who come through the doors of the Nederlander Theatre and he did it by just putting one scripture at the bottom of his Vita.  It didn’t take much.

During the intermission of Newsies, I also went to the ladies room.  You may think that is TMI, but on the shelf of the stall I chose there was a note that read, “God wants you to know that He loves you very much.” It was impactful because God’s love is something I struggle with.  In my head, I know He loves me but my heart still doesn’t grasp it at times.  One person decided to encourage anyone who chose that stall with a message of God’s love, and that included me.  I left it there for the next person to read. It didn’t take much to warm my heart that day.

I only brought two of our Pearls of Promise devotional books with me and I am now realizing I should have carried more. As I was packing, I didn’t really think this was going to be a ministry trip and my suitcase was getting heavy. However, I am meeting people I’d like to bless with a devotional.  Earlier in the week, I sat down and had coffee with some other guests at the hotel, who I did not know.  After conversation with them, I found out one of the ladies, Cindy from Trinidad, was a Christian. We had a wonderful conversation and I wanted to give her a gift because our meeting was special so I left a book for her at the front desk.  It doesn’t take much.

Later, when I went back to the room, the housekeeper was changing the sheets.  I spent some time talking to her and found out she had moved here from Italy to be closer to her daughter. We had a delightful conversation.  The next day, when I ran into her again, I felt a Holy Spirit prompting to give her the other devotional.  I don’t know if it will have any impact on her but you never know.  It doesn’t take much.

It doesn’t take much to spread God’s love to others. A pleasant smile; an encouraging word.  Just like the young actor in Newsies proclaimed, everything we do, we should do for the glory of God. Today, as we head down to Little Italy, another favorite New York City destination, I am praying I can share God’s love with someone else.  It doesn’t take much to make a difference for the kingdom.
