No One Knows About Tomorrow by Lane Jordan Burday

Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. (James 4:13-14)

Ten days ago, my husband and I left our home in North Texas and drove four hours south to our daughter’s house to babysit our precious grandson while she and her husband took a ski trip to celebrate their anniversary.

I decided not to bring my heavy coat because South Texas is so much warmer and Texas has had weather in the 60’s and 70’s all month. Bad decision! While we were here, one of the worst snowstorms and freezes in American history hit. 250 million people were in an area that would receive feet of snow and ice.

I really wanted to panic! What if the electricity shuts off, and our pipes burst? But our neighbor came to the rescue. She found our covers for our pots and bushes outside, opened the house cabinets, and got the water running. Meanwhile, we were fine in Spring, TX, with plenty of food and electricity, and had such a great time with our grandson.

This experience made me realize we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Only God knows, and I’m more than thankful that I know Him and am saved! He holds His children in His hands, and we can face each day without fear.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34).

That verse hits the spot! We don’t know what the future holds. But we do know Who holds the future.

God does not promise us a problem-free life. We try to solve all our difficulties, even though many aren’t solvable. That’s why we must “walk by faith and not sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). This encourages us to rely on faith rather than physical evidence or immediate understanding.

And as God’s children, we can be at peace during adverse circumstances. In fact, God’s light shines most brightly through believers who trust Him in the dark. Yes, a trust like that can only come from the Holy Spirit in us, helping us to trust.

“Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man…He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD” (Psalm 112:4, 7).

Tomorrow, we will pack up and head back home, and we hope the roads will be okay to drive on. The forecast for tomorrow seems ok. But we never know!

I pray you let Christ into your heart to guide and comfort you and give you a peace that no one can fully understand. Our world is full of trouble, but God will hold you and give you great peace.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).
