Spring Cleaning by Lane Jordan Burday

For God is not a God of disorder but of peace (I Corinthians 14:33).

Many years ago, when there wasn’t any air conditioning or central heat, households would be able to do a deep clean when the weather got warmer—in the Spring! That’s where the term Spring Cleaning began, and even though our homes do not get as dirty as they did when we used coal to heat or had to wash our linens in tubs of water, it’s still a great time to re-order your home.

You may ask why? I believe that anything that God has given to us, whether it’s a home, yard, cars, clothing, etc., should be taken care of. We are stewards of the world as He said in Genesis 1:28 and 2:15: “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground…The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

God is a God of order. Everything He created on earth was done in an orderly way, from the heavens to the earth, from light to dark, from water to growing things.

I do know that when my home is in order, my clothing is clean and hung, my home is vacuumed and dusted, and my pantry and refrigerator are cleaned out, I feel a weight is lifted off my shoulders! Yes, it is very hard to keep up with all we must do, especially if you have young children and you work outside the home.

So, start with just the simplest areas to clean and order. If we do just a little every day: a load of laundry, a trip to the grocery store, one meal doubled for other nights, cleaning just one area of your home, you will be on the way to an ordered life!

God also wants our hearts and minds to be cleansed of all that may soil them. Psalm 51:10 (ESV) says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

I pray for whomever is reading this. I know so many of us are having a hard time. The last thing you want to do is clean and get organized. I’ve been there! So, go to the Lord and ask for His strength and His Holy Spirit to help you just for one day. Then tomorrow, ask Him again for that day. I promise you will see a light at the end of the tunnel.
