The Cell Project

     This week my son gave me news I never enjoy hearing.  He had a project due in science and he needed my help.  It was a project that required some artistic creativity and the thought of having to be artsy crafty makes me break out into a cold sweat every time.  Whenever I work on a project like this with my son, there is usually a sense of relief once it’s completed, but there is never a sense of pride over the end result!  The art work, shall I say, is lacking.

     This particular project involved designing an animal cell.  We had to include and label the various elements of the cell and had to construct it so it was “3D.”  As I worked with my son on our multi-dimensional presentation, I had forgotten about the intricacy of a single cell.  One animal cell has a nucleus, ribosome, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi bodies and cytoplasm, to name a few elements.  Don’t ask me what each of their roles are, but it’s amazing that all this fits into a space that is only ten to one-hundred micrometers large.  As we looked at this one, amazingly detailed part of life, I began to marvel at the intricacy and detail of God’s creation.  I wondered how anyone could not believe there is a designer.  How could this microscopic cell just randomly throw itself together? 

     Isaiah 40:26 encourages us to “Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:  Who created all these?  He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name, because of his great power and mighty strength; not one of them is missing.”  As I marveled at the single cell, I asked the same question and came up with the only answer that made sense to me, “the Lord God, of course.  He is the Almighty Creator, maker of heavens and earth and maker of the single cell.”

     Today, why don’t you admire God’s creation?  Think about the intricacy of your own body, the variety of creatures that roam the earth and the beautiful plant life that God so graciously provided us.  After meditating on these things, thank God for being a loving creator who not only made us but desires to interact with us, his creation.
