The Day of Thanksgiving

thanksgiving

(This Thanksgiving poem, written in the spirit of “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” made it’s debut on the POP blog on Thanksgiving, 2014. We thought we’d share it again.)

‘Twas the day of Thanksgiving and all through the house,

Only the dog and I were stirring,

Hopefully not a mouse.

There’s much to be done,

Pumpkin pies to be made,

Then there’s turkey and dressing,

The refrigerator I’ll raid,

Because there’s green beans, and potatoes,

An appetizer or two,

Don’t forget to chop up the salad,

Clock

Time’s slipping away; what will I do?

But before the busyness begins,

I sit still in my chair,

Because I can’t start this Thanksgiving,

Without thanking God up there.

He’s the reason I am breathing,

He’s the one I want to please,

Because without his tender forgiveness,

I’d still be on my knees.

I’m blessed to be a mother,

I’m thankful I’m a wife,

But without Jesus’ sacrifice,

I’d be void of hope, and filled with strife.

So, today, before you start to run,

Take a moment at HIS feet,

To thank the one who gives you life,

And be grateful for his mercy seat.

list

List off the things you’re thankful for,

Look, I’ll give you a plan to follow,

On Love,

On Joy,

On Forgiveness,

On Patience,

On Self Control,

On Mercy,

On Protection,

On Hope,

On Gifts,

And a plate so full.

Praise be to the God who lifts us out of the slimy pit of life.

Praise him who stays with us, and doesn’t slip off into the night.

As the sun starts to peak out with its bright face in the east,

It’s time to say Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Let’s prepare for a wonderful feast! (LBW)

  1. I liked your poem. This is my this year’s

    Thanksgiving poem.

One of the best things that I ever did
Was learn to be grateful when I was a kid.
I knew I was loved by my mother and dad,
Even though I was disciplined when I was bad.
I learned to appreciate my family
Although sometimes Mary was mean to me.

    I had my sister’s hand-me-downs to wear.
    I won’t lie and say that I didn’t care.
Mary’s 4-H project gave me the clue
About how I might get a new dress too.
I not only made a new dress every year,
4-H showed me a wonderful career.

I became responsible and learned to share.
I enjoyed having a meal to prepare.
Cleaning my half of the room was understood.
Allowance earned only when I did what I should.
Caring for children was our normal life,
Creating and loving and settling strife.

Church was a usual part of our week.
A closer relationship with God I’d seek.
I confessed my sin and accepted Christ’s life,
Which helped prepare me to be a minister’s wife.
God’s wisdom and strength through sickness and health
Helped me to trust God with my life and my wealth.

That I can know the God of creation,
That He cares about our little nation,
That He is righteous and wants justice for all,
Is willing to listen whenever I call,
    Provides wisdom and comfort continually,
This is the kind of Friend Jesus is to me.

So why am I thankful on Thanksgiving Day?
There are too many reasons for me to say.
God is so mighty, but loves little me.
I can walk and talk with Him continually.
He’s loving and powerful, wise, just, and kind.
A better companion I never could find.
    Barbara
