The Desires of My Heart
For some reason, I no longer have any worship CDs, so this weekend I set out to buy a new one to play in the car. The CD I purchased featured many different Christian singers and groups but there’s one song on the CD I am partial to, Matt Redman’s “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord). The words speak to how I think we should feel about the Lord:
Bless the Lord oh my soul, Oh my soul, Worship his holy name, Sing like never before Oh my soul. I worship your holy name, The sun comes up, It’s a new day dawning, It’s time to sing your song again, Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes.
When this song plays, I sing it at the top of my lungs to God as an act of worship. It’s my desire to praise and worship the Lord morning, noon and night. What about you?
Is this what it means to “delight in the Lord?”
I believe Psalm 37:3,4 contains the key to joy and happiness in life. It’s a verse that has been repeated to me several times this week so I’ve taken note and studied it: Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
What are the desires of your heart? As I meditated on these words, I realize I have many, some stronger than others, but I know the surest way to receive them is to remain focused on the Lord and to remain on His path. I have learned that attempting to manipulate scenarios in order to receive these desires will not be blessed.
Instead, I gravitate to the truth that I need to trust God to handle the details of my desires, and continue to move forward in ministry and his calling on my life.
Do you delight in the Lord? The Hebrew word for delight also translates to “enjoy.” Do you enjoy God?
I find the more time I spend with God, the more I enjoy and delight in him and it seems the blessings flow more freely in my life when I do. I trust his plan for my life and love Him so much that although I know he’ll give me the desires of my heart, I sacrifice my own desires for Him. Now that’s an oxymoron!
I want to be reminded daily of the promise in Psalm 37:3,4 and have it displayed prominently near where I write these devotions.
“Lord, I pray I never stop delighting in you!”

Hi Lisa! Thanks for this devotion today! I needed to be reminded to trust in God’s plan for my life this morning after having a curve ball thrown to me that I didn’t want to play with.
I have found that delighting in God is also delighting in the many facets of His blessings on my life…dreams He has brought to be (i.e. the fact that I have my own horse) that I never thought would happen. I delight in His creation…sunsets, rainbows, the beauty of the change of seasons, a silent snowfall with big fat flakes that each intricately designed…what an awesome God He is! AND I love His sense of humor, too! Several years ago I prayed a prayer for God to remind my rebel son of His word. In having to visit my son at his work place, I discovered he had to pass a church that had a sign out front with the commandment “Honor thy father and mother” every day. TOO
