The Mosquito

Bzzzz.

A pesky mosquito buzzed around my ear, waking me up in the middle of the night last night. As I write this post, he continues to taunt me today, by my ear, in my face and is causing my skin to itch. The mosquito is one byproduct of the never-ending rain North Texas has received. However, as I search for the words to write this morning, I believe the tiny irritant is carrying a message, and forcing me to focus on the very thing that brought him inside.

The mosquito represents the negative aspects of the rain, and will not leave me alone until I pray for all those who have been devastatingly affected by the torrential downpours.

Will you pray with me?

Texas flooding

Let’s pray for all the dear people who do not have homes to go back to, along the Blanco River, in Wimberley, San Marcos and beyond.

Let’s pray for those who have been displaced by the floods.

Let’s pray for the families of those who lost their lives in their storm.

Family missing

And I am especially distressed by the news that a family of four was washed away by the floodwaters.

Heart wrenching.

Let’s pray for a miracle in this situation. I continue to hope they will be found alive.

And now, let’s pray for a respite from the rain. More is predicted today.

James 5:17 says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

You may feel helpless as the reports continue to pour in about the devastation throughout Texas and Oklahoma, but do not underestimate the importance of your prayers. The Greek word for “effective” in the James passage means “to be at work in” or “to produce.”

Your prayers produce results.

In Matthew 17:20, Jesus said if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can move mountains. In the same way, your supplications, through Christ, have the power to stop rain. You just need to pray, believing.

With all of us joined together in prayer, it will be powerful enough to blow the rain out of the land, so the sun will shine again, despite what the forecast says.

Scripture gives us many promises in the Bible. But today, I believe this one applies.

“Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

Let’s start asking, sisters and brothers.

Let’s seek the one who brings the rain, and has the power to stop the rain. He wants us to recognize his authority. That’s what he desires from us. The non-stop rain is a reminder we are not in control.

Let’s pound on the door of the only one who calms the wind and rain.

And then, after he receives our faithful prayers, let’s watch him work.

I’ve said what I believe God wants me to say this morning.

No surprise.

The mosquito’s gone now.
