Three Blessings We Miss When We Don’t Spend Time With God
It was a routine procedure that knocked me out of commission for one day. A bit weak and fuzzy brained from anesthesia, all I could do was rest in bed and watch television. So instead of the usual sports programming, I took in seven back-to-back episodes of the show, “Bones,” and loved them. This program has been on for twelve seasons and I’d never seen it. I related to the main character’s nerdy awkwardness and the comedic exchanges between her and the other characters on the show. Always a mystery lover growing up, I am fascinated with investigative “who done it” shows. I thought, I’ve missed so much entertainment all these years!
In the same way we miss out when we don’t spend time with God each day. We forfeit blessings from our Father in Heaven who desires to give us special gifts every time we enter his presence. Here is the first blessing of three:
#1 Revelation
Do you want to understand how God thinks? Do you long for a fresh word of encouragement for yourself? The only place we can receive this Holy download is through spending time in the Bible and through prayer. As Christians, our bodies house the Holy Spirit, the revealer of God’s truth. 1 Corinthians 2:11 says, “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
When King Nebuchadnezzar was desperate for an interpretation of his troubling dreams, only Daniel could decipher the messages. That’s because in Daniel’s time alone with God, his Divine Instructor gave him the key to break the code. Daniel said, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries” (Daniel 2:27-28).
Do you have a mystery in your life that needs solving?
Has God given you a dream you don’t understand?
Then it’s important to seek out the only one who knows the answers, the Holy Spirit.
I long for revelations from God.
What about you?
Every time I begin my quiet time, I ask, “Show me something I’ve missed. Give me a fresh word.”
Sometimes I am saddened by all of the revelations I forfeited when I did not have a daily time with God. In the seventeen years between salvation and rededication, I am sure there is a warehouse full of unopened messages. But now, I don’t want those messages to “return to sender.” I am thirsty for every morsel God wants to feed me.
Today I am challenging you to get alone with God. Give him more than ten minutes of distracted time. Before you open his Word, ask him to show you a revelation, especially crafted for you, then prepare to be blessed.
On Tuesday, we’ll share the second blessing we miss when we don’t spend time with God.
