Three Blessings We Miss When We Don’t Spend Time with God (Part 3)

“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is truly the most terrible poverty.” Mother Theresa

We all desire to be loved and to feel love. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, love is the third greatest human need. Many of us try to fill this void in our hearts with human love. While it might satisfy for a while, eventually imperfect human love fails us. God allows this shortcoming so we’ll seek his deep reservoir of love to fill the gaping holes in our hearts.

But when we don’t spend time with God, we miss out on the overflowing blessing of God’s love.

Are you longing for love?

Then start seeking God as you did a mate in your earlier years.

I am writing this blog from my hotel room near Toronto, Canada. Out of his love, God provided this trip away. I needed to prepare two messages for a Women’s Conference in January, and desired uninterrupted time with my Heavenly Father. While my husband is at work in a Canadian office, I am reflecting on these messages in the stillness of this room with beautiful snow falling outside. It’s as close to a cabin in the mountains as I could get! The Lord knew my needs and provided a solution.

When we love someone we:

Take care of their needs.

We overlook their faults.

We treat them with kindness.

We put them before ourselves.

We trust them.

We don’t compete.

We are faithful.

While humans often fail in one or more of these areas, God’s love is consistent.

God's love

Psalm 36 says God’s love “reaches to the heavens” and that it is “unfailing” and “priceless.” Psalm 32 says God’s love surrounds the one who trusts in him. No matter where we look: east, west, north, south, his love is in front of us.

According to Psalm 63:3, God’s love is “better than life.” Life can be tough can’t it? An extra helping of God’s love is required to make it through the difficulties we often face.

God loves us so much that he adopts us as his children (1 John 3:1).

But we can’t understand the blessing of our Heavenly Daddy’s love unless we spend time with him.

We won’t recognize his acts of love in our life if we never enter his love bank.

When I think about the desires of my heart, I remember all the times God provided for those desires, a desire for a sportscasting career, a desire to be married, a desire to have children. Now my desire to write books and speak about him is being fulfilled.

Spend a few minutes thinking about your life.

How has God surrounded you with his love? Are you looking for it? Are you spending time with him so you are aware of the love he has for you?

You never have to feel lonely or unwanted again.

God is waiting to tell you how much he loves you through his Word, through a special surprise during the day or possibly through a desire fulfilled. If you’ve been looking for love in the all the wrong places, the right place is with God.

Allow him to fill your heart.
