God is the One Who Places Kings on the Throne by Lane Jordan Burday

He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. Daniel 2:21

I watched the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and for all those who were against this man, it appears God wanted him to be president!

Whether you voted for or against him, the verse above shows that God removes kings and replaces them with others. We can never understand this, but we are grateful for having a God who knows what action is needed next for our nation and for ourselves.

Romans 13:1-3 states that all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.

I also love this verse from Isaiah 1:16-17 that gives a solid reason for the purpose of government, to suppress evil and maintain justice and care for the oppressed:

Wash! Cleanse yourselves! Remove your sinful deeds from my sight. Stop sinning! Learn to do what is right! Promote justice! Give the oppressed reason to celebrate! Take up the cause of the orphan! Defend the rights of the widow! (NET)

I hope you will take time to pray for the leaders of our great nation—even if you didn’t vote for them. I Timothy 2:1-4 instructs Christians to pray for all people, including leaders, so they can live peaceful and godly lives. And as you pray, give praise and thanks to our God, who is powerful enough to reign over every detail in our lives.

God ascends among shouts of joy, the Lord, with the sound of a ram’s horn. Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our King, sing praise! Sing a song of wisdom, for God is King of the whole earth. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.
Psalm 47:5–8 (CSB)
