Mothers are Precious by Lane Jordan Burday

Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” (Proverbs 31: 28-29, NLT)

Mother’s Day is probably one of the most loved celebrations because a mother is so important to her family’s foundation. When we see famous people or athletes interviewed, they almost always say, “Hi Mom!” to the camera. Moms are so important to most of us.

Because it’s the mother who stays when the father leaves. It’s the mother who makes sure her children are fed, clothed, clean, and taught. It’s the mother who directs her children to work hard and make something of themselves. It’s usually the mother who shows her children who God is and how to walk with Him and Jesus.

I know some of you reading this may have had a different childhood where your mom wasn’t supporting or loving you, and for that, I’m deeply sorry.

But you can change it around to where you are that type of grandparent to your grandchildren! In Joel 2:25, God promises to give back what has been stolen from you:

“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust have eaten” (NKJV).

This means that even though something or someone caused you harm and/or you lost years to unhappy circumstances, God will restore to you the love and the hope you lost. I have seen this happen many times!

Mothers also have such an important role in the family, for they establish the atmosphere that makes a house a home. Fathers have a great leadership role in the family, but it’s the mother who has the emotional element that softens life and builds a nest for her family. We are, in fact, servants to our family. Of course, not door mats! But servants as Christ called His disciples to be. It was Christ who cleaned the disciples’ feet. We are called to that also.

I know some of you may think that too much is placed on the mother to keep it all together. She is, in fact, the glue that keeps the family together. But if a mother puts God first in her life, He will guide, strengthen, and support her every day. God made the first family when he brought Eve to Adam. God wants your family to thrive, so He will be with you every second of every day.

“Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in His commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed” (Psalm 112-1-2 NIV).

My prayer to you is that you rejoice in being a mother, even if some of your children are prodigal. God created life in you for a reason! Walk with Him daily, pray with Him daily, and continue to lift your children up to Him. One day in heaven, you will be surrounded by your children, and then you will understand all that you couldn’t see on earth.
