One Attribute of Love by Dr. Lisa Burkhardt Worley

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end…

Lamentations 3:22

I love fresh flowers, and because of my birthday and our documentary premiere I have had a houseful over the past week. However, when I placed one of the flower bunches in a vase, a stem snapped off and I had a choice. Should I throw the broken flower away or let it live in a smaller vat of water?

Something told me to save it, and that little broken flower lived longer than the bunch in the vase!

I thought this was a wonderful analogy to the broken people in our lives. So often, we just want to discard them. They are too much trouble to manage. What’s the use anyway? They are not going to change. However, when it comes to God’s love, it never gives up on anyone, and we are representatives of God’s love. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says, “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”

We are called to be bearers of God’s love to friends, family members, and acquaintances. Jesus said, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34–35).  We will not draw people to faith by hammering them over the head with the Gospel message. We draw them through a loving and caring demeanor toward them. Jesus reached people by taking care of their needs, both physical and spiritual. We should ask God to be used as a vessel of His love in someone else’s life. It might not be convenient. It might be uncomfortable. It could take time, but ask God to be used in this way.

God’s love does not throw in the towel. I strayed from faith for 17 years, but the LORD brought me back through tough love, and through a Bible study on the Gospel of John, the “love gospel.” He never gave up on me and we should never give up on anyone else. This is a beautiful attribute of divine love.
