The Great Commission or the Great Confession?

Someone took Jesus seriously when he said, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit….

I know, because I’m on Twitter. Many of my friends don’t understand my Twitter obsession, but there is something very cool about connecting with Christians from all over the world. It has broadened my perspective about God’s reach. I’ve found out there are a lot of Christians in Canada.  Did you know that? In fact, I only have articles published in two on-line magazines, one of which, Power to Change, is in Canada and has 500,000 monthly subscribers. That tells me somebody’s worshipping God up there. I don’t know why, but I used to think faith based groups stopped at the northern border.  I just scanned my “follower” list and found Christian sisters and brothers from Brazil, Puerto Rico, Lagos, South Africa, France, London, Asia’s Latin City and Indonesia. There are many others from all over the world. With the internet, there is no place God’s truth cannot be heard and that warms my heart.

I wonder what the disciples are thinking now as they survey the world-wide Christian community, which began with their obedience to spread the word about the risen Christ. Do they jump for joy when someone falls to their knees and accepts Christ in Mozambique? Do they weep when revival breaks out in a South American community? Therefore go and made disciples of all nations…

I am humbled to know that through 140 character tweets, I might encourage someone thousands of miles away with a verse or lead them to a devotion like this. I guess it’s one way to fulfill the Great Commission.

However, Making disciples of all the nations doesn’t mean you have to be on Twitter, or travel to a distant land on a mission trip. Your mission field could be your workplace, neighborhood, your child’s school or the grocery store. I think it’s safe to say there is someone who needs to know Christ wherever you find yourself each day. The question is, are you doing it? Do your actions and words suggest you are a Christian? Do you slip in a faith-based statement in your conversation about the weather?  Or is the “Great Commission” the “Great Confession” later in the day when you realized you missed an opportunity to share your faith?

I am guilty many days but the key each morning is to pray for an opportunity to live out the Great Commission. Allow God to lead you to someone who needs to hear the truth. I’ve found that when I pray that, the Lord is faithful to place someone in my path. Then there is no doubt. I have to share.

God doesn’t want us to keep our faith to ourselves. He has placed us on this earth to tell others about Him. Who, in your area of influence, needs to hear about the hope Christ provides? Therefore go….
