The Significance of 33 by Lisa Burkhardt Worley

On Monday, we conducted a book launch for our new devotional, Treasure, and we ended up as a best seller on Amazon and, for a couple of days, ranked as high as #33 in devotional books. While I would have liked Treasure to make it into the top ten, I felt like there was some significance to finishing at #33 so I looked up what the number means biblically. This is what I found out:

  • Jesus was 33 when he went to the cross.
  • The 33rd time Noah’s name is used in Scripture is when God makes a special covenant or promise with him (Genesis 9:11-13).
  • 33 is the numeric representation of the Star of David.
  • The divine name of God is mentioned 33 times in Genesis’ story of creation.
  • 33 is also the equivalent of the word “Amen” (Truth).
  • The 33rd time Abraham’s name is used in the Bible is when Isaac, the child of promise, is born to him when he is ninety-nine years old (3 x 33!)
  • The 33rd time Jacob’s name is found in Scripture he promised to give a tenth of all he had to God and it was after his vision of a ladder reaching to heaven.
  • Jerusalem became the capital of Israel during the remaining 33 years of David’s rule.

`However, the “aha” moment came when I read that the number 33 means “God’s promise.” My name, “Lisa” is a derivative of Elizabeth and also means “God’s promise.” It was a sign that God’s hand is on Treasure, and I believe He will use it for His glory.

God reveals hidden things if we dig for them. 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 says, “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

When I began to look deeper into what the number 33 means biblically, my Heavenly Father opened up His treasure chest of insight and rewarded the search. God desires for us to move beyond the surface. He wants us to dig for His riches.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it (Matthew 13:45).
