Don’t Fall Into the Pit by Lane Jordan Burday

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:2-3

For some reason, the holiday season can pull many into the pit of depression. Which is one reason Thanksgiving is my favorite! For when we turn our eyes and hearts on all that is good, all that we have been blessed with, we are able to keep the darkness away.

Oh, dear one, if you have ever been in the pit of depression, you already know how very hard and difficult it is to get out. Once we start to slide into it, self-pity puts its teeth into our souls and continues to help us slide down.

Self-pity is a slimy, bottomless pit. Once you fall in, you tend to go deeper and deeper into the mire, and the darkness becomes profound. And what’s worse is the feeling of self-pity becomes your new ‘comfort zone.’ It’s what we rely on each day.

But God is with us!! Our hope is to look up and see the Light of God’s Presence shining down on us. You may not see or feel His light, but God’s light can reach you at any depth.

How do we get out of a place of darkness and despair? We must place our trust and focus on God, and His many blessings, and finally, we will sense that we are moving up and out of our despair and depression. God will cover you with His love and comfort and cover you with His righteousness. He has promised He will never leave you.

As the Psalmist once wrote, “Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence.” (Psalm 42:5)

I know it is so very hard to get out of this depression, but God is with you every second. And if it helps, great men and women of the faith also fought depression: Martin Luther and Charles Spurgeon are just two. Remember, the defeat is not in fighting depression—but giving into it.

So, focus on the beauty of giving thanksgiving to God for all He has done.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with praise (Psalm 95:2).
