When You Don’t Know What to Do…By Lisa Burkhardt Worley

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you .”

(Psalm 32:8, ESV)

What should you do when you don’t know what to do?

Perhaps there is a challenge in a work environment, a family scenario, or a friendship and you cannot figure out how to solve it. What is the strategy? How should you proceed? Do you do nothing?

Even the most seasoned of all believers face a dilemma here and there, and no matter how intelligent, they can be perplexed about the situation. That’s because God does not always give us problems that we can solve on our own. He desires for us to seek His guidance. I, personally, do that using three ways:

Prayer- James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” There is nothing like lifting up a burden to our heavenly Father. Share all the details. Ask for His wisdom on how to handle the situation. Pray for him to defend you if false information is being circulated. He, alone, knows the truth and sees your heart.

Godly Counsel- Proverbs 19:20 encourages, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.” If you are married, the first place you should go for counsel is your spouse. My husband has great discernment, so when I am blinded by hurt feelings, he will set me straight. Inner circle, trusted friends represent another avenue for counsel. In my morning quiet time a couple of days ago, I prayed for the Lord to show me who to seek for advice in a scenario, and he revealed who it was.

The Bible- Psalm 119:5 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” I was praying about whether or not I should write on this subject today, and several of my daily devotions contained passages that supported this idea. Pray before you read. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where to study. Ask for His Word to speak to your scenario. There are answers waiting in Scripture.

What I have found is that you don’t have to ruminate over a difficulty. Seek God’s wisdom today. He’ll get you through any trial when you don’t know what to do.
