Where is Stability? by Dr. Lisa Burkhardt Worley
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God (Psalm 42:1, NLT).

Almost a year ago, I experienced a 6.2 magnitude earthquake while in Guatemala City for a documentary shoot. It was so powerful that it shook the entire hotel where we were staying. There was nothing we could do to stop it. It was out of our control. We prayed that we would be okay, and praise God, we were.
Life can shake us up as well. There are times when, no matter where we look for stability, the ground is moving. Have you experienced that? What I’ve found is that during periods of uncertainty and instability, sometimes the only stable place to go is the presence of God.

Over the weekend, my husband was out of town at a conference, but I still attended church. It would have been easier to stay home—I had a good excuse—but I needed community and longed to feel something stable after a topsy-turvy week. I met the LORD during worship, and the ground stopped shaking.

In Psalm 18:2, King David said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Most rocks are solid. Pea-sized stones have taken out a couple of my windshields. Meanwhile, think of a boulder. Like a boulder, God is our immovable rock and desires to provide us with a solid footing. David also described God as a stronghold. Merriam-Webster defines a stronghold as “a place of security or survival.” No matter what you are going through, you can survive by fleeing to God’s secure presence.
We can trust that instability has a limited run and is only for a season. However, when we go through it, it is always better to run to that place of refuge where we know we will find God’s stability. It may be as close as your Bible. Where is that place for you?
