Who’s Building Your House? By Lisa Burkhardt Worley

My grandfather was a well-known architect in San Antonio, and one of my favorite memories was when, as a little girl, he would show me his latest project coming to life on his drawing board. His homes had a signature look to them, and he was one of the first to bring the Mediterranean style to South Texas. I know in my heart I could never design a home like he did. It was his gift.

In the same way, no one is able to design a life like God can. For many years I ran ahead of God, making decisions without Him, not praying over career moves, but I’ve learned my lesson. I now pray through every decision and every venture before taking a step. If God says no, I don’t do it. I want my house to withstand the elements. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”

Who’s Building Your House?

There are many opportunities that can seem attractive and it’s easy to jump into something quickly, but we can often find that in those instances, we end up back peddling and eventually moving on to something else. That’s why it is important to pray first—to seek God’s direction.

Jesus desires for us to build a life of obedience to His teachings. In Matthew 7:24-27, He says by doing so, we will build a sturdy house. “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

We all want our spiritual homes to withstand the hurricanes of life. What major decisions are you facing right now? Have you ever thought that your decision could impact the stability of your life in the future?
