Your Greatest Fan by Lisa Burkhardt Worley

With so few fans in the stands in Tokyo, the Summer Olympics just don’t seem the same. There’s something about watching the crowd that draws us into an event even more. The elation. The cheering. And sometimes—even the disappointment when someone’s beloved country falls short in competition.

After withdrawing from the Olympic gymnastics competition, gold medalist Simone Biles told the Washington Post that the lack of fans affected her. Biles said, “It’s been really stressful this Olympic Games, just as a whole, not having an audience. There are a lot of different variables going into it.”

However, we don’t have to be a world-class athlete to desire a few fans to encourage us, right? And if we are honest, there are probably days when we don’t feel that anyone is cheering us on, leading us to the conclusion that we are alone.

But here is the truth. We are not alone. Our biggest fan, God, is with us 24/7 and He is in His heavenly bleacher cheering us on as we fulfill His calling on our lives.

This week I saw something in Scripture that I had never seen before. In Ephesians 1:5 it says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do and it gave him great pleasure” (NLT). I knew I had been adopted into God’s family through belief in Jesus Christ. God is the only Father I’ve ever known, but the part of the verse that I had never seen before is that this adoption didn’t just give God pleasure—it gave him great pleasure.

I realized that our heavenly Daddy is our biggest fan! He is thrilled and pleased that we are on His team and He will do everything He can to equip us to run this race we call life.

He is faithful. The Word tells us He’s not a fair weather fan. Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us.”

Because of Him, we can win any challenge we face. “No in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37, ESV).

Our opponents have no chance with God in the stands. “When I cry out to You, Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me” (Psalm 56:9, NKJV).

And just like an overzealous fan, God pours out his love on us and wants to be there for us at every major event in our lives. He will hang in there through good seasons and bad. He won’t chunk us for someone else who always seems to win. That’s what true fans do, and there’s no one truer than our heavenly Father.

Today, will you praise Him for always being there for you—through the ups and downs—for being your greatest fan?
