Are You Blue? By Lane Jordan Burday
Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:8)

I’m sure everyone who has ever lived has gone through days or even longer feeling blue or depressed with times of discouragement.

We can even go through the Bible and see many of the great saints who experienced these emotions: Elijah when he was running from Ahab and Jezreel; Moses when he tried to govern the newly freed Israelites; David as he was on the run from King Saul; Leah, who knew she was unloved by her husband, Jacob; Joseph when he was sent to jail for a crime he didn’t commit; and Jesus the night before His crucifixion.
Knowing I’m not the only one who experiences the blues helps. But what can truly help us?

Prayer. When you’re feeling overwhelmed or blue, pour out your heart to God. Express your anxieties to God in prayer, and for those who journal, write down these prayers.
Reading the Word. When we read the Word of God every day, even for a few minutes, God’s Spirit will work immediately in our spirit, soul, and emotions. Let His truth challenge, permeate, and transform us into correct thinking that life is not hopeless (Romans 12:2).

Worshipping the Lord. When we sing praises and hymns to the Lord, our thoughts will leave our problems and turn toward the light of God’s love and truth! “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). The best way to do this is by fellowshipping with other believers in your church, Bible study, or small group. And another way is to turn on Christian music and sing with all the praise songs in your home or car.
Turning your eyes on Jesus. I love the song “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things on earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace. (Written by Helen H Lemmel in 1922).
When I get the blues, this is my ‘go-to’. When you feel darkness beginning to close in, turn to Jesus. He will be a refuge (Psalm 62:7-8) and will give you the strength to keep going.
