Seeking Wisdom by Lisa Burkhardt Worley

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:17

There are many activities and invitations that can pull at our time, and it is difficult to know when to say yes and when to say no. That is why we need God’s wisdom to understand His direction for our lives. Wisdom has been defined as “knowing how to live God’s way in God’s world and acting on that.” To live God’s way, all we have to do is pray for his wisdom. It’s a gift that James 1:5 says God will generously to us.

Whatever season of life we are in, it’s important to realize that God’s plan is better. Isaiah 28:29 claims God’s wisdom is magnificent. Proverbs 2:6 says that from God’s own mouth comes knowledge and understanding. However, pressing into God’s wisdom also involves trust. We may not understand His counsel at times, but Isaiah 55:8 reminds us that both God’s ways and thoughts are not our ways or thoughts. That is why it is imperative to seek the Lord’s wisdom, so we do not waste time by proceeding in a direction that has nothing to do with our calling. God’s ways are always better.

Asking for wisdom should be at the top of our prayer list. When God told King Solomon he could request anything from him, Solomon did not pray for riches or power. He asked for a discerning heart to govern the people and distinguish between right and wrong (1 Kings 3:9). Because the LORD was so pleased with Solomon’s answer, he still gave him the riches and power, as well as the wisdom.

If we begin asking for godly discernment, imagine all the great decisions we will make. Others will seek our counsel because of the favor of God on our lives. Because God is directing our steps, we, too, will be considered wise.

Will you seek God’s wisdom daily?

Prayer

LORD, I am tired of trying to do things my way. Please guide me in your wisdom. AMEN
