Slaying the Giants by Dr. Lisa Burkhardt Worley

I’ve been watching the new Prime Video Series House of David and I am fascinated with all of the special effects, especially how they have humanized Goliath, the giant that the future King David slew with a slingshot and stone.

While the episode featuring the confrontation between David and Goliath has not been released, we know from the biblical account that David had no fear of Goliath and he believed that God would give him the victory over the giant that was threatening Israel.

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. (1 Samuel 17:45-46, NIV)

We find another story about giants in Numbers 13 but it has a different outcome. Moses sends twelve spies into the Promised Land to scout it out. All but two gave a bad report due to the giants they encountered, and in this case, they did not trust that God could conquer the oversized beings.

But the men who had gone with him said, “We can’t attack those people! They’re too strong for us!” So they began to spread lies among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored is one that devours those who live there. All the people we saw there are very tall. We saw Nephilim there. (The descendants of Anak are Nephilim.) We felt as small as grasshoppers, and that’s how we must have looked to them. (Numbers 13:31-33, NIV)

When you face your giants, are you brave like David and believe that God will bring a victory, or are you like the ten spies who feared the giants and didn’t think they could overtake them?

If we’re honest, we might admit to running from the giants in our lives. We can underestimate the power of God and can hide in fear. But when we take ourselves out of it and surrender the giants to the LORD, He can work miracles. Psalm 34:17 says, “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” The giants don’t seem so large when the Lord fights for us.

What giants are threatening you today? Are you ready to face them like David, with God leading the charge? It’s the only way to slay a giant.
