Discernment

Warning

“Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Pyrgia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to” (Acts 16:6-7).

Discernment. Longing for that spiritual gift, I have asked for it numerous times, but until God answers my prayer, I surround myself with friends who do have the gift.

I also trust in the Lord, and pray he will guide my path (Proverbs 3:5-7).

I wonder if the Apostle Paul lacked the gift of discernment? He had to be bopped on the head on the road to Damascus in order to turn his life around. Then on his missionary journey, instead of figuring it out himself, it was the Holy Spirit that warned him when it was unsafe to enter an area.

The key is Paul listened to the Spirit’s small, still voice.

Paul was obedient, and changed his plan.

Paul didn’t complain when he had to reroute his course.

Are you willing to let the Holy Spirit steer your life? If you don’t naturally discern situations, you have a resource that will help you.

God also uses other believers to warn us when headed the wrong direction.

This week I am heartbroken to say I was deceived by another Christian, but thankful someone came forward to warn me about him before I helped him promote his business anymore. I didn’t realize that what I saw on the surface was not what he truly was. Continuing further with him had the potential to negatively impact my ministry, and I am thankful God sent someone who was bold enough to warn me.

It’s always difficult to change course, and you may feel dumb that you didn’t see the situation clearly in the first place, but you will be eternally thankful God’s warning lights.

Your Father in Heaven does care, and desires to guide your path if you let him.

What situation do you need discernment on?

Seek counsel from friends who have that gift.

Listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Be open to a new direction.

Then thank God for protecting you.
