Expecting Jesus By Lane Jordan Burday

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24:44

A friend of mine was waiting for a technician to come and repair her dishwasher. She saw a text message that said, “Jesus is on his way and is expected to arrive at approximately 1:15.”

Needless to say, she was somewhat taken aback, but of course, it wasn’t the real Jesus. The technician’s name was Jesus – hay-soos!

But when can we expect Jesus, the Son of God, to arrive? He said over 2,000 years ago that He’d return, but only the Father knows the precise “day or hour” of His return (Matthew 24:36).

Though no one knows the exact day and time, Jesus cautioned us to be ready for His return. We are to live as if today would be the day He returns, with a perspective of eternity, serving God and taking advantage of every opportunity to share His message of love and hope with others.

Remember the story of the ten virgins who were waiting for the bridegroom? In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus told this story to show we must be ready for Him. Five of the virgins were wise, and five were foolish because they didn’t bring extra olive oil with them. You see, no one knew when the bridegroom would arrive. They all fell asleep waiting when, at midnight, there was a shout, “Look, the bridegroom is here! Come out to meet him.” But as the virgins trimmed their lamps, the foolish ones realized they didn’t have enough oil. They begged the five wise ones to borrow their oil, but there wasn’t enough. They were told to go and buy some, but while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready could go with him to the wedding banquet. The foolish virgins were left behind.

This story sounds sad, but it’s an excellent reminder. While on earth, we must prepare our hearts and live a life of faith for when our bridegroom, Jesus, returns to take us to heaven and His wedding banquet.

We don’t know the exact time, but we know to read God’s Word, study, love others, and live a life of love and faith.

I pray you are preparing for His return!
