Facing Uncertainty by Lisa Burkhardt Worley

After a week of touring Dublin and parts of Scotland with my husband, I left Dublin on a plane—alone—and headed to England for another documentary taping and a two-week conference at the University of Oxford. It can be unsettling to travel internationally by oneself. I do not travel light so I don’t have my husband’s help with suitcases. At the check-in counter, one bag was overweight, so I had to transfer a toiletry bag to my smaller carry-on suitcase and check both bags.

There were questions swirling in my brain. Will my luggage make it? Will the car service be waiting after I clear customs? Will we find the home where I am staying tonight?

When facing any kind of doubt and uncertainty we must pray.

God gave me early signs that he was traveling with me. Prior to leaving I read the comforting words of Psalm 68:35 that says, “You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.” God would provide His strength.

On the way to the airport, my taxi driver turned on an Irish Christian station, Spirit, and I listened to worship music in route to my flight. It was as if God was saying, Do not worry. I am with you.

Friday, I had to take two flights to get in place for a documentary taping, but the first flight was three-and-a-half hours delayed, so I missed my connecting flight to Alderney, the location of our shoot. I prayed again, because we only had the next day to get this done otherwise the documentary would not happen. As it turned out, we had to spend the night in Guernsey where our hotel, transportation, and meals were all paid by the airline, and I saved the money I would have spent for the same in our destination of Alderney. We were rebooked for a flight the next morning, thanks to the help of an Alderney native, and the documentary filming was completed. God’s providence.

It was also a beautiful day at Alderney, and I know what we did there will glorify God and help to fight Holocaust denial. What a privilege to serve the Creator of the Universe!

And by the way, my bag was lost from Guernsey to Alderney, but it went ahead of me to Southampton where I ended up after the documentary filming and I retrieved it there. It’s a lesson learned, and important to remember that even though we feel alone sometimes, we are never alone. We have to pray and trust God because He sees what is ahead. If we turn our concerns over to Him, He will guide us through the uncertainty.
