He Loves Your Voice by Dr. Lisa Burkhardt Worley

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly (Psalm 5:3).

The created body is an intricate, amazing design. Humans are created to move and think, but also created to speak. God gave us a larynx, with vocal cords running along its edges. By using ligaments and muscles, the vocal cords open and close, and together with the movements of the tongue and mouth, different sounds can be produced at different volumes, allowing us to vocalize words and sing. Isn’t that amazing?

But here is something more incredible. God gave us the ability to speak because he loves hearing our voice. In Psalm 3:4, David said, “I cry to the LORD with my voice and He heard me from His holy hill.” We often get quiet before God in the morning and wait to hear a word, but the LORD also wants us to speak audibly to Him. He gave us the ability to do so!

I pray silently a lot, mainly because I don’t want to wake up my husband or scare the neighbors whom I see on my morning prayer walk. However, when the opportunity arises, I speak audibly to God, and the conversation varies.

He’s okay with our laments. In the book of Lamentations, Jeremiah openly vented to God after the Babylonian Exile. Moses was known to air his frustrations about the Israelites to God. “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?” (Numbers 11:11).

But what I believe God is waiting to hear from us are our audible praises. King David was the best at this. Here are some examples:

But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high (Psalm 3:3).

I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness. I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High. (Psalm 7:17).

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? (Psalm 8:3–4)

The Psalms are full of audible praise. Maybe that is why I like the Psalms so much. Speaking audibly to God seems to make the conversation more alive. He knows our thoughts, but he created us to speak and loves to hear His children’s voices. What will you say to Him today—aloud?
