Keep the Fire Burning by Lisa Burkhardt Worley
He makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. Psalm 104:4
What does it mean to be “on fire for God?” We hear that terminology but how does it translate into everyday life? I know that I want people to see the fire of God in me whether I am hosting a television show or speaking in a public setting. However, there are days where the fire burns brighter than others due to overworking and distancing from God that can lead to burnout.
To avoid a smoldering fire in our lives, we can learn from the Levitical priests who had to keep the fire on the altar burning continuously. In Leviticus 6:12 it says that “Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it.” In other words, the priests had to be attentive to the fire—daily. The fire could never go out.
That is a good word for us. When we don’t tend to our spiritual fire daily, it can affect the fire burning in us, and it should never go out. We can go through stretches where worship, Bible study, and prayers take a back seat to a hectic schedule. It’s during these times where we may feel depleted and unplugged from God. We may be wondering why everything seems to be going wrong. It’s because we have not stoked the fire.
God appeared to Moses in a burning bush. At night, he led the Israelites through the wilderness as a pillar of fire. Hebrews 12:29 says, that our God is a “consuming fire.” If this is true, why wouldn’t remaining close to God, the consuming fire, keep the fire burning in our own lives? When we start to feel lethargic and spiritually dry, it’s important to step away from busyness and cozy up to the fire. It is only there where our faith will be rekindled.
How bright is the fire of God in your life?

I enjoyed reading your teaching on our burning fire. The way you explain it is so clear and concise. It makes understanding the concept more real and simpler. It’s an effective way to help new Christians understand why it’s so important to be on fire for God and how to do it effectively. Your use of the scriptures also adds confirmation of the connection between God and fire. He wants our love for Him to be the most important thing in our lives that we burn for Him.
